Winery Profile

Jacobs Creek

Jacob's Creek Winery in the Barossa Region of Austrailia

The history of Jacobs Creek begins with the settlement of South Australia.
Colonel William Light who surveyed the city of Adelaide in 1836 made his way northeast in 1837 to the Barossa Valley, which he named after a famous English land victory at Barrossa in the south of Spain.

When William Jacob first surveyed the Barossa Region in 1839, he and his brother John took up land in the Hundred of Moorooroo. Moorooroo is derived from an aboriginal word meaning ‘meeting of two waters. The two waters involved were the North Para River and the creek, which fed into it. The creek was named Jacobs Creek after William Jacob. The Jacob brothers small cottages still stand, overlooking Jacobs Creek.

Jacobs Creeks fresh, easy drinking style and excellent quality has been extremely popular in both Australia and around the world. It has become the most popular brand in Australia and Australias leading export brand for more than a decade and is widely recognized as spearheading the countrys export growth.

An ongoing commitment to quality has resulted in Jacobs Creek being a regular winner at wine shows in Australia and overseas. Over the last three years it has been awarded more than 800 medals in wine shows globally. Additionally,  Tasters Guild recently named Jacobs Creek as its 2006 “Winery of the Year.”

From the vine to the bottle, the mission for Jacobs Creek is simply to improve the quality of each vintage. The fruit for the winery is sourced from different regions within Southeastern Australia, enabling the winemakers to overcome seasonal variations in any particular region, improve the quality of the wine, and select fruit that will best suit the wine style.

The philosophy behind Jacobs Creek is to offer a fresh, fruit-driven, easy drinking wine that can be consumed without years of cellaring. It must also offer excellent value and consistency. The philosophy behind the creation of the Jacobs Creek wine style has remained true and consistent over nearly 30 years – to offer a high quality, easy drinking, flavorful wine that can be enjoyed without years of cellaring while providing excellent value and consistency.

Today there are many areas of interest around Jacobs Creek that all add to the rich tapestry of the brands history. From the moment visitors arrive in the Barossa Valley they discover it is one of the leading wine tourism locations in Australia. The Jacobs Creek story is rich with a history that shaped the landscape, buildings and people of the area. A history that leads back to the origins of European settlement in the Valley and the beginnings of the South Australian wine industry.

Worth the Visit

Whether you choose to experience the original winery built by Johann Gramp on the banks of Jacobs Creek in 1847 or the state of the art Jacobs Creek Visitor Center built a few kilometers down- stream over 150 years later, you can still feel a real sense of place and ‘soul for Jacobs Creek, undiminished by time.

The opportunity to taste and enjoy the range of Jacobs Creek wines and contemporary Australian cuisine are two of the many attractions available at its Visitor Center.
